Abstract

Consequent on the rise in the incidence of domestic violence in Rivers State at present, this study investigated television advocacy and the fight against domestic violence in the state. The main objective was to find out whether Rivers State Television advocacy campaign against domestic violence has helped to check the incidence of the vice. From a population of 7,195,023, the sample size of 385 subjects was determined using the online sample size calculator, checkmarket.com. Data collected were analysed using frequency distribution tables, percentages and four-point Likert scale with a weighted criterion score of 2.5.  Findings showed that Rivers State Television advocacy campaign on domestic violence educates people on the vice but owing to lack of interest on the side of the audience towards Rivers State Television advocacy, the campaign has not been able to curb the trend. The study concluded that as there is no excuse tenable enough for the continued prevalence of domestic violence, it should be eliminated. The study therefore recommended that the government should enact and indeed enforce laws on domestic violence and that RSTV should be more creative in designing its campaigns against domestic violence in Rivers State in order to attract the interest of members of the audience. The study also recommended that the Rivers State Television devise other means of carrying out its advocacy campaigns on domestic violence
