Abstract

This study examined strategies for optimizing pipeline efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector with emphasis on technological innovations and best practices for reducing operational losses and enhancing pipeline security. The persistent challenges of crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, leakages, and aging infrastructure have significantly affected the efficiency and reliability of Nigeria’s pipeline transportation system, resulting in production losses, environmental damage, and economic setbacks. The paper adopted a qualitative literature review approach and relied on secondary data obtained from peer-reviewed journal articles, academic publications, industry reports, and policy documents published between 2019 and 2024. Data from the reviewed literature were analyzed using thematic content analysis to identify major factors affecting pipeline efficiency and the technological and management strategies capable of addressing these challenges. Findings from the study revealed that pipeline inefficiency in Nigeria is largely driven by crude oil theft, vandalism, infrastructure deterioration, and weak monitoring systems. The review further showed that technological innovations such as real-time monitoring systems, fiber-optic sensors, automated leak detection technologies, satellite surveillance, and Internet of Things-based monitoring systems have strong potential for improving pipeline monitoring, early fault detection, and operational reliability. In addition, best management practices including preventive maintenance, improved regulatory oversight, community engagement, and adherence to international pipeline management standards were identified as critical strategies for strengthening pipeline security and reducing operational losses. The study concluded that optimizing pipeline efficiency in Nigeria requires a combination of technological innovation, improved infrastructure maintenance, stronger institutional coordination, and effective stakeholder collaboration. The paper recommends increased investment in modern pipeline monitoring technologies, modernization of aging pipeline infrastructure, and strengthened regulatory enforcement to enhance the security and operational efficiency of pipeline systems in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
