This study examined how firms in the Nigerian oil and gas sector can leverage market opportunities through competitive advantage and market positioning strategies. The study was motivated by the persistent gap between the sector’s vast resource potential and the limited ability of firms to translate available opportunities into sustained performance. A correlational research design was adopted, with a population of managerial staff drawn from selected oil and gas firms in Rivers State. A sample size of 178 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The instrument demonstrated acceptable reliability coefficients ranging from 0.79 to 0.84 using Cronbach’s alpha. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that market positioning strategies, technological innovation, and stakeholder relationship management all have significant positive effects on competitive advantage. Among these variables, technological innovation emerged as the strongest predictor, highlighting the importance of digital transformation and operational efficiency in enhancing firm performance. The study also found that firms that maintain strong stakeholder relationships are better positioned to achieve operational stability and sustain market relevance. The regression results indicated that the combined effect of the independent variables accounted for a substantial proportion of variation in competitive advantage. The study concludes that firms in the Nigerian oil and gas sector must adopt an integrated strategic approach that combines effective market positioning, continuous technological innovation, and proactive stakeholder engagement to fully exploit market opportunities. The study recommends that firms prioritize strategic differentiation, invest in modern technologies, and strengthen stakeholder relationships to enhance competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
