Rethinking Employee performance appraisal, measuring performanceAbstract
Previous employee performance appraisal heavily focus on backward-looking metrics and annual scoring. This compliance-driven approach often triggers employee anxiety and reduces collaboration. This study advocates for a developmental paradigm that transforms performance appraisal from a static measurement exercise into a strategic vehicle for growth and agility. This paper theoritically examines the rethinking employee performance Appraisal: From measuring performance to developing people The study was anchored on Goal-Setting Theory by Locke & Latham, 2002, and Self-Determination Theory by Deci & Ryan, 2000. It concludes that technology can support this shift by enabling real-time feedback, tracking development goals, and personalizing learning. However, technology alone is not enough. The human elements such as trust, empathy, meaningful conversations, and alignment with organizational values are what transform appraisal from a bureaucratic exercise into a growth experience. The paper concludes by recommending amongst others that HR should equip managers with skills in active listening, asking developmental questions, and giving constructive feedback.
