AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PARADOXICAL REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN RIVERS STATE CULTURE

The study looked at an Assessment of the Paradoxical Representation of Women in Rivers State Culture. It aimed at examining the variations which exist in the representation of women in Rivers State Culture. The study was anchored of the Feminist and Agenda Setting Theories, which underscored the intricacies and challenges associated with women devaluation in Rivers State. The study used the survey design in its methodology, where a population of 3, 793,780 was used to derive a sample size of 400, employing Taro Yamane formula. A total of 399 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and used for further analysis. Findings from the study indicated that women are offered political appointments and empowerment as a way of recognition in River State, that initiating and enforcing a legislation that allows women to inherit parental properties is one of the ways the government can create a balance in terms of proper representation of women in Rivers State Culture. It was however recommended for the government to initiate more empowerment schemes that better engages the female folks in the society, such that they are better valued economically and represented in Rivers State, and for the government, through media influence, initiate and enforce legislations that allow women to inherit parental properties as one of the ways the government can create a balance in terms of proper representation of women across cultures in Rivers State.
